Bitcoin climbed about 5.3% on Thursday, 20 August 2026, pushing past $72,000 to $72,415, its highest level since early June, according to CoinGecko and Sahmino data. The jump accelerated after the US Treasury said it would double buybacks of old long-term government bonds, a move markets read as indirect quantitative easing that weakens the dollar and lifts scarce assets like bitcoin. Around $1.5 billion of short positions were forced to cover.

Transcript

After months of selling pressure, bitcoin surged again today and pushed past seventy two thousand dollars. One bitcoin reached seventy two thousand four hundred fifteen dollars, about five point three percent above yesterday. From a summer low near fifty eight thousand dollars, it has climbed roughly twenty five percent. What was the trigger? The US Treasury doubled its buybacks of old long term bonds. From the October crash and the summer bottom to today's jump, the recovery has been long. Altcoins led today; ripple and ethereum rose more than bitcoin itself. About one and a half billion dollars of short positions were forced to buy back. For Iranians, a tether holder gets a rial shield while a bitcoin holder gained in dollars. The domestic tether rate settled at one hundred eighty eight thousand nine hundred forty three tomans. Now watch fund inflows and whether bitcoin holds the seventy two thousand dollar level. The jump was big, but partly technical, and still thirty seven percent below the October peak. Bitcoin hit its highest since early June; full story on Sahmino dot com. Do you think this rally lasts?
